Travel guide

About Meghalaya

The 'abode of clouds' is a plateau of waterfalls, caves and Khasi villages. The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat took generations to grow from rubber-fig roots.

Shillong is a hill-station capital with a famous music scene. The Umngot river at Dawki is so clear in winter that boats seem to float on air.

Best time
October to April. Dawki's river is clearest from November to March; monsoon (June–September) is spectacular but wet.
Ideal trip
5–7 days
Getting there
Fly into Guwahati (Assam). Shillong is about 100 km away, roughly 3 hours by road.
For visitors from abroad
As of our last check, Meghalaya has no Inner Line Permit, but rules are changing. Carry government photo ID for every adult (stays register guests), expect to hire a registered guide for treks such as Nongriat, and check the latest entry notice before you travel. Carry cash: ATMs are scarce outside Shillong and Sohra.

    On-trip help

How fit do I need to be for Nongriat?+

The descent is easy, but the 3,000-plus steps back up take 1.5–2.5 hours. Moderate fitness is enough if you go slowly.

Can we add Kaziranga?+

Yes. Kaziranga is about 5 hours from Shillong and is open from November to April.

Is it good for vegetarians?+

Yes, in Shillong and at most tourist stays, though Khasi food itself is meat-heavy.
