Brief History

  • The well-known Pondicherry is a capital city of union territory Puducherry in India. It is enclosed by the state of Tamil Nadu with which it shares most of its culture and language. This city was highly corrupted due to its French, Portugal and other countries cultures. They turned this beautiful city into a grand port city.
  • The foundation of Pondicherry was laid in the year 1673 after the “La Compagnie française des Indes Orientales” was successfully obtained a firman from the Qiladar of Valikondapurarm under the Sultan of Bijapur. On 4th February 1673, a French Company Official by name Bellanger took up residence in the Danish Lodge in Pondicherry.

Connectivity

By Air

The airport at Pondicherry can accommodate the landing of a small aircraft only and has flights coming in from Bangalore and Hyderabad. However, you can get a connecting flight if you are coming from Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Chennai is the second nearest domestic as well as international airport which is approximately 135 kilometres away from Pondicherry. The Chennai airport is well connected to all major cities across the globe. Once you reach the airport, you can hire a private taxi to reach Pondicherry.

By Train

The nearest rail station from Pondicherry is Villupuram, which is about 35 kilometres away from the town. The railhead is well-connected to cities like New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, and Trivandrum. Two of the most popular trains are New Delhi Pondicherry Express and Nagarcoli Express. Once you reach the station, you can hire a taxi that will drive you to the city.

By Road

Several buses ply frequently from Chennai, Thanjaur, Trichy, Coimbatore, Bangalore and Madurai to Pondicherry. Both private and state-owned buses are available. The bus fare will depend upon the distance covered.

The best time to visit Pondicherry is from October to March as the weather is suitable for sightseeing .

Mahatma Gandhi road heritage town it is open from 6am to 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm every day

Varadaraja Temple

The temple is located in the same location as Vedapureeswarer Temple, is devoted to Lord Vishnu.The temple was built by Chola dynasty ruler in 11th century and the oldest temple in Pondicherry.
Considering the architecture it is quite similar to Dravidian style south architecture.

Durga is worshipped by the Hindus in many forms. And one such form is Kamakshi and the Kamakshi Amman Temple in Pondicherry is dedicated to this incarnation of the goddess. One of the most venerate temples in the town, this ancient shrine is believed to be more than 500 years old. It is built in typical Tamil architectural style and has a large,
decorated gopuram at its entrance. The timing to visit this shrine is from 6 am to 12 noon and 5 pm to 9 am.

Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwar Temple

One of the famous temples in Pondicherry is Sri Gokilambal Thirukameshwar Temple also known as Villianur Temple. This temple was built in 1the 2th century under the Chola dynasty. The shrine is of Lord Shiva one of its called Thirukameshwar.

The Pondicherry Museum

located on Saint Louis Street and is open on all days except Mondays and national holidays between 10:00-17:00 hrs. The museum is famous for its Bronze and Stone sculptures from Chola and Pallava dynasty also the rare artefacts excavated from Arikamedu.

The museum consists of Pre Christian relics as well like Roman and Greek Jars, pieces from Tsung period in china, made from beads and precious stones excavated from Arikamedu site.

Rock beach which is also known as Promenade or Pondicherry beach by people is the best place to hang out. Auroville Beach is a prominent beach, situated near to Auroville in Pondicherry. Located at about 12 km from Pondicherry, it is an ideal place for weekend getaways. Popularly known among the locals as Auro Beach, it offers a picturesque landscape with the crystal blue waters and the phenomenal sunrise and sunset. The beach is perfect for surfing so don’t forget to come here and do some adventures and especially in summer.
The beach is not much safe because of high tides.

Mahe Beach

Sir Aurobindo Ashram

Also you can the samadhi of Aurobindo Which is situated in the centre. The Ashram offers Yoga, Meditation and sports activity for the tourists.

Arikamedu
