Brief History

The regions of Pithoragarh city were enclosed and were a fraction of an area known as Manaskhand, which broadened from Kailash Mountain and Bhabar. Interestingly, their first inhabitants were Asuras and Nagas. Later the area was ruled by Kuninda kings, but it was taken away by the Kurmanchal kingdom.

In the 13th century, it came under the kingship of Bam Kings. But still, it didn’t last long as Bharti Chand started a war on them, and after 12 years of fighting it, Chand became victorious. Still, the fighting didn’t stop, and after more struggle, Kumaon won the battle.

The history of Pithoragarh is very amusing as in the year 1790, a fort was established by Chand kings but was destroyed by the Indian government due to the assault by China. In the year of 1912, a department of the Indian National Congress was established, and many people also attended Lucknow bouts of Congress.

In 1930, the people of Pithoragarh contributed to the movement of civil disobedience, and it is said that they were ten in total. When 1945 starts, Congress won the election, and in 1947, as India got its independence, the same happened to Pithoragarh.
